A New Addition to the Family
Last weekend while we were out running some errands we ended up at PetsMart, where they happened to be holding an adoption day through the SPCA. We've been talking about getting another dog for Peyton to play with for a while now and had even considered buying a yellow lab puppy for my birthday last month but decided to hold off for a while. They had some cute dogs but no one really caught our attention in that special way, but they told us there was another PetsMart in Brandon that was having adoption days, too, so we decided to head over and take a look and see what they had. We walked in the door and he was right in front- a 4 month old Lab mix named Logan. I fell in love with him immediately and we decided to take him home.
Savannah and I walked around the store and looked at the birds and fish while Brad filled out all the paperwork and then we went around and picked out a new crate and some toys and then we took our new son and headed home. Savannah couldn't get enough of him on the ride home, she kept sticking out her hands and feet trying to get him to lick her. We introduced him and Peyton in the backyard and they became fast friends.
It had been a good first week having him home. On Monday Brad called me from work and told me that he couldn't remember Logan's name for anything and that we needed to change it. So we kept going back and forth, tossing names out there and he vetoed everything I came up with but didn't want to name him himself. Then he called later and said, what about 'Boone' after our favorite vacation spot in North Carolina.... and it stuck. Luckily he hadn't learned Logan yet and took to Boone very quickly. Savannah occasionally calls him 'Boo' and thinks he is just the cutest thing ever.
So yesterday was Mother's Day and my parents came up to visit and my dad took us out to lunch. We went to Lowe's and they bought me some hydrangea's and jasmine and a trellis to plant outisde so after they left Brad and I were outside trying to get the trellis in the ground but for some reason the ground around our house is super hard and we were trying to get the soil softer. We had the dogs tied to a stake in the ground where we have had them the last two weekends while we have been planting. There was a woman walking down the road with a pug so I told Brad to grab onto Peyton before he spotted the dog so he didn't take of after it. Brad grabbed him and then Peyton spotted it and took off running and his collar broke when it [tried] to yank him back when there was no slack and all of a sudden Boone let out the most horrible scream I have ever heard in my life. I looked down and his left hind leg was lame and there was about a 2" spot where the hair had been completely skinned- the cable Peyton was attached to had gotten caught around his leg and when the collar broke Boone's leg was stuck. We took him inside and he wouldn't put any weight on his leg at all so we called the emergency vet and took him right over. They took some x-rays and there is one spot that might be of some concern, where it is either a vein going into the bone or a small hairline fracture. They didn't splint him, they just sent us home with some pain pills and I am taking him to the vet on Wednesday anyway so I will have my vet review his x-rays and see if, in 3 days time, he is more able to put weight on it or if we should just go ahead and have him splinted. He is fine otherwise, in good spirits but I just feel terrible, absolutely terrible that this happened. We definitely will be looking into another way to keep the dogs in the yard.... even possibly having invisible fencing installed so nothing like this happens ever again.
I know I have been promising for the last 2 months that I will get pictures of the house posted, and now I need to add some of Boone and the recent ones of Savannah, too..... but sometime between Easter and now we managed to misplace the cable that connects my digital camera to the computer and we can't even upload any of the pictures we have taken in the last 4 weeks. but I promise that as soon as we either find the cable or buy a replacement one I will have a few new slideshows to post!!
